Sex Ed for Adults

Fit: Sex Ed for Adults THE TIP-OFF that this wasn't just any gaggle of gal pals lounging in the back of Nolan's in Adams Morgan: the sex toy sitting on the table beside them. "Mr. Reliable," as instructor Emily Nagoski called her teaching tool, was there to help her instruct the group on the finer points of performing oral sex.

All of this would have seemed completely sketchy if it weren't for the fact that the bespectacled Nagoski looked like a stereotypical small-town librarian. Oh, and she spoke with the authority of someone who had received a Ph.D. in Health Behavior and Human Sexuality from Indiana University and had spent three years teaching through the famed Kinsey Institute.

Thanks to MoxieintheCity.net, a site devoted to organizing social events, she's ditched academia. Now she's going to help the general public unlock the mysteries of the bedroom. She debuted her services earlier this month with classes on fellatio and cunnilingus. (Next month: more fellatio and the Kama Sutra.)

"What are the challenges of oral sex?" she began, querying the eight ladies sipping cocktails. They suggested answers like "jaw aching" and "gag reflex." And those are issues Nagoski addressed during the hour-and-a-half session. But she also tutored her charges in getting more comfortable with male anatomy and understanding various techniques that could improve the experience for both partners. The vibe was technical, but casual, with plenty of jokes mixed in. "The only way to get this information across is with humor," she said.
Case in point: For the guys, instead of Mr. Reliable, Nagoski pulled out Ida, a puppet vulva made of velvet and satin. "It's so nonthreatening and friendly," she explained. Like the women, the four men who showed up at another recent seminar looked a tad nervous at the beginning. But soon they were dishing about how to get women in the mood.

"I have a friend who says the most erotic thing you can do is the dishes," Nagoski told them — before noting how every part of the body is an erogenous zone.

Although information about sex lurks just about everywhere these days, Nagoski says the benefit of a program like this is that you can ask a reliable source your specific question and get immediate answers. So when the women wanted to know if using an Altoid would give their performance a kick, she told them yes. When the men asked about the best lubricants, she wholeheartedly recommended silicone-based Eros.

Even though there were plenty of laughs and titters, the students took the information quite seriously.

"Sexual training is like training to run a marathon," Nagoski said, and after class, it seemed many were ready to strap on their sneakers and go for a jog. (One woman's boyfriend was even waiting in the front of the bar for her.)

For students in a relationship, the advice promised a needed boost. One woman, who has been with her husband for 22 years — since high school — seemed particularly appreciative: "When you've been with someone a long time, things get routine. And I never had a learning curve. Sometimes it's like we're two 15-year-olds having sex."

And for students happily in singlehood, it's guidance that could come in handy at any moment. "It's not unlike me to sign up for a random class, cooking, whatever," said a 27-year-old man. Nagoski's lessons have to be just as useful.
